Con questo post riprendo il filo di questo blog, da tempo ricerco una cornice in cui misurare i miei pensieri e metterli nero su bianco.
Questo lockdown mi ha aiutato a capire di cosa voglio parlare, o meglio quale prospettiva voglio mettere sul piatto del confuso e caotico dibattito sul web.
Voglio offrire alla discussione un quadro più ampio.
Credo che questi tempi che stiamo vivendo si possano capire meglio facendo un passo indietro e capendo dove siamo finiti, cioè tenendo una giusta distanza per capire quali storie rappresentano veramente quello che sta accadendo, quali dati e quali fatti di cronaca possono far da bussola, anziché portarci alla deriva per poi incagliarci in bufale, visioni estremiste o peggio.
Così inizio con una riflessione su questa giornata e quest'anno strano: il 9 Maggio 2020.

With this post, I restart the lost thread of this blog. From a long time, I'm looking for a frame that allows me to jot down my thoughts in an effective way.
This lockdown is helping me to understand what I want to write about, or more precisely, which perspective I want to offer to the chaotic debate on the world wide web.
I want to offer to the discussion a bigger picture, the bigger picture (at least for me).
I believe that we can better understand the times we are living if we take a step back. We need a proper distance to get where we are, and to pick the right data, stories, facts and news that would help us as a compass. Otherwise, we would be in a ghastly open sea in which we will quickly end up broken because of fake news, extremisms or worst.Therefore, I start with a reflection on the today date and this current year: the 9th of May 2020.
Il 9 Maggio è una data a cui ho sempre tenuto molto. È la giornata dell’Europa, e in Italia ricordiamo Peppino Impastato, attivista ucciso dalla Mafia siciliana, e Aldo Moro. Aldo Moro è stato il Presidente del Consiglio che cercò il compromesso tra i due principali partiti italiani del tempo: la Democrazia Cristiana e il Partito Comunista Italiano. E il terrorismo delle Brigate Rosse lo uccise dopo giorni di sequestro.
C’è molto da imparare da questa giornata.
Il 9 Maggio 1950 è la giornata dell’Europa perché la politica Europa del tempo trovò l’amore e il coraggio per iniziare il processo ancora in corso dell’integrazione Europea. Quel processo iniziò per via della decisa azione di leader, ma sopratutto per la consapevolezza degli Europei che si potevano superare le atrocità del passato solo con un eguale gesto, e anche più forte, per la pace globale.
Quella consapevolezza trovo incarnazione nella Dichiarazione di Schuman, Ministro degli Esteri francese dell’epoca, che celebriamo con la giornata dell’Europa.
"La pace globale non può essere salvaguardata senza fare sforzi creativi proporzionati ai pericoli che la minacciano" - Robert Schuman -Stesso giorno, ma anno differente: il 9 Maggio 1978, quel giorno l’Italia fu scossa nel scoprire che le Brigate Rosse avessero ucciso Aldo Moro, e Peppino Impastato, lo stesso giorno, fu ammazzato dalla Mafia.
Furono uccisi per ragioni diverse. Aldo Moro cercando di trovare compromesso non solo tra due partiti, ma due mondi: quello comunista e quello occidentale. Peppino Impastato perché resistette contro la Mafia con ogni possibile strumento: la radio, la cultura, la politica, la creatività, etc.
Ma questa non è una lezione di storia. Questo è solo il contesto. È solo il passo indietro che ci serve per capire questo 2020. Un passo indietro di 70 o 42 anni.
É facile sentirsi persi e schiacciati in questo 9 Maggio 2020.
Buona parte del dibattito attuale è intorno a come le società saranno dopo la pandemia come se qualcuno, da qualche parte, abbia scritto se saremo migliori o peggiori, e come dovremmo essere.
Il futuro sarà ancora più minaccioso se lasceremo coloro che oggi portano a galla il peggio di noi a continuarlo a fare. Non è me, ma Michelle Obama ad averlo detto: “se vanno verso il basso, noi puntiamo in alto.”
L’Europa puntò in alto il 9 Maggio 1950, dopo la seconda guerra mondiale.
Ma voglio dire che puntare in alto non è abbastanza. Credo che il 9 Maggio 1978 ci possa aiutare a capire cos’altro fare: mediare, mediare e ancora mediare.
Mediare non vuol dire perdere i propri valori, ma creare una identità condivisa e inclusiva che si crei convincendo sul terreno dei valori e dei principi. Peppino Impastato disse chiaramente che “la Mafia è una montagna di merda!”. Aldo Moro offrì al paese l’obiettivo comune della sconfitta del terrorismo che stava minacciando l’Italia.
Il terrorismo, alla fine, fu eradicato.
La Mafia è ancora qui, ma è anche per via del sacrificio di Peppino Impastato che fu possibile nei primi anni ’90 immaginarne la fine.
Alla fine, non è sempre possibile vincere e raggiungere il sogno che abbiamo.
Ma il 9 Maggio 1950 non si unificò l’Europa in ventiquattro ore.
Il 9 Maggio 1978 non si sconfisse il terrorismo o la Mafia, quel giorno sembrò semmai il contrario.
Si iniziò un processo.
Perciò, se facciamo un passo indietro di alcuni anni e decenni per guardare al 2020, la lezione è chiara: non importa quali sfide personali e comuni stiamo affrontando, dobbiamo iniziare il processo.
La storia non è ancora scritta!

The 9th of May is a date always dear to me. It is Europe Day, and in Italy, we remember Peppino Impastato, an activist against the Sicilian Mafia, and Aldo Moro. Aldo Moro was the Prime Minister that try to compromise between the two main Italian political Parties of that time, the Christian Democracy and the Italian Communist Party. And the terrorism of the Red Brigades killed him after days of kidnapping.
There is a lot to learn from this day.
The 9th of May (1950) is Europe Day because European politics that time found the love and the courage to start the ongoing process of European integration. That process started because of the bold move of leaders, but first and foremost the Europeans' awareness that we could overcome the atrocities of the past only with an equal, and even more robust, move for the global peace.
That awareness found the embodiment in the Schuman Declaration, Foreign Minister of France that time, that we celebrate with the Europe Day.
"World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it." - Robert Schuman -Same day but different year: the 9th of May 1978, in that day Italy was shocked founding the Red Brigades killed Aldo Moro, and Peppino Impastato that same day was killed by the Mafia.
They were killed for different reasons. Aldo Moro trying to compromise not just between two parties, but two worlds: the Communist and the Western world. Peppino Impastato because he was standing up against the Sicilian Mafia using every possible tool: the radio, culture, politics, creativity, etc.
But this is not a history lesson. It is just the context. It is the step back we need to understand this 2020. A step back of 70 or 42 years.
It is easy to feel lost and overwhelmed in this 9th of May 2020.
Most of the ongoing debate is around how societies will be after the pandemic like if someone, somewhere, wrote if we will be better or worst and how we will be.
The future will be even more threatening if we leave those are going low, in this time, going lower and lower. This not me, but Michelle Obama: "if they go low, we go high."
We have to go high as Europe did the 9th of May 1950, after WWII.
But I want to add that going high is not enough. I believe that the 9th of May 1978 could help us with what else to do: compromise, compromise, and compromise again.
Compromise doesn't mean losing its values but building a shared, inclusive identity standing and convincing on the field of values and principles. Peppino Impastato made clear that “the Mafia is a Montagna di merda!” (a mountain of shit). Aldo Moro created a common goal for the country in defeating the terrorism that was threatening Italy.
Terrorism, in the end, was eradicated.
The Mafia is still here, but even because of the sacrifice of Peppino Impastato was possible in the early 90s to imagine an ending of it.
In the end, it is not always possible to win and achieve the dream we have.
But the 9th of May 1950 they didn't unite Europe in twenty-four hours.
In the 9th of May 1978, they didn't end terrorism or the Mafia, quite the opposite.
They started a process.
So, if we take a step back of some years and decades looking at this 2020, the lesson is clear: no matter the personal and shared challenges we are facing, we have to start the process.
History is not written yet!
